When the police arrived at the scene, they found that a patient named Riyazuddin was injured and was later pronounced dead by doctors.
A 32-year-old man was shot dead by a teenager inside the ward of Delhi's GTB Hospital on Sunday.
According to official reports, the incident occurred in Ward 24 of the hospital.
Police said the victim, Riyazuddin, was admitted to the hospital on June 23 and was undergoing treatment for an abdominal infection. There was a shooter, they added.
Police said Ryazuddin later died of gunshot wounds.
“GTB Enclave police station received a PCR call regarding the Sector 24 incident,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Surendra Choudhary said.
“When the police arrived at the scene, they found that a patient named Riyazuddin had been injured. Doctors later declared him dead.
The police officer said that around 4pm, an 18-year-old man entered the ward and shot Riazuddin.
“A case is being filed and a team has been formed to arrest the criminal. On the surface, this matter seems to be a personal grudge.
Meanwhile, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said safety reviews of all hospitals will be conducted and no negligence will be tolerated.
A hospital official said that several people pushed the doctor who entered the ward, shot the patient and fled.
“No one else was injured. The SHO, ACP and crime branch officials of GTB Enclave reached the crime scene after being informed by the CMO on duty.
A nurse on duty, who did not want to be named, said the teenager entered the ward at 3:59 p.m. and asked everyone to stay calm and not panic.
“He took out a handgun that was hidden behind his back, shot the patient and ran away,” she said.
The nurse said the gunshots attracted a crowd outside the ward, and one of them reported the incident to police.
“It's scary for everyone on the ward,” she said.
