MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (AP) — The remnants of Hurricane Beryl spawned at least four tornadoes in Indiana, including an EF-3 tornado with winds of up to 140 mph (225 kph). swept through a small city in the southwestern corner of the state.
The tornado that struck Mount Vernon and other parts of Posey County late Tuesday grew to about 300 yards (274 meters) wide and caused damage nearly 6 miles (9.7 kilometers) long, collapsing large parts of a warehouse and derailing train cars, causing destroy.
The weather service office in Paducah, Kentucky, said on Facebook after surveying damage along the path of Tuesday's storm that it began north of the Ohio River.
An EF-3 tornado or three others tore through southwestern Indiana on Tuesday, but no injuries were reported, as Beryl's remnant tornado moved into Canada and the northeastern United States after knocking out power to millions in the Houston area.
The EF-2 tornado with winds of up to 120 mph (193 kph) started near the Gibson County town of Poseyville, cutting an 8.4-mile (1.5-kilometer) path and leveling cornfields, the weather service said. Then there was damage to a farm outbuilding.
Two EF-1 tornadoes with winds up to about 100 mph (161 km/h) were also confirmed, including one that touched down near the town of Springfield in Posey County, damaging trees. Another tornado struck in Gibson County just west of the town of Patoka, damaging trees, crops and a utility pole.
Two other EF-1 tornadoes with winds of up to 100 mph (161 kph) touched down in Union County in the northwest corner of Kentucky on Tuesday, the weather service said. No injuries were reported.
