Heavy rains hit Mumbai overnight, causing severe flooding in many parts of the city on Sunday.
The busy Andheri Metro was affected and several areas including near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) were inundated.
There were also major traffic jams on the Western Highway due to heavy downpours.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that there will be heavy showers in Thane and Raigad districts on Sunday morning.
“Heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Raigad and Thane during the next three to four hours,” the Mumbai IMD said in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) in the early hours of the day.
Earlier, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the country's financial capital's civic body, called on people in the largest city to stay home “unless necessary”.
“IMD has issued an orange alert and heavy to very heavy rain is expected. People can leave their homes only if necessary,” the BMC said in a statement the previous day.
An orange alert was also issued for Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindudug districts of Maharashtra's Konkan district on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Mumbai, which has been experiencing torrential rains for the past few days, also experienced showers on Saturday morning, causing water to accumulate on the streets and congesting traffic on many roads in the city.
