McHenry County appeared to be spared from the worst of the storm that hit the Chicago area Monday night, but downed trees were being cleared in remote areas, including parts of Crystal Lake, and power remained out into Tuesday afternoon.
The Crystal Lake area near the Dole Building and Rendall Middle School was severely affected by the storm. Residents shared photos of storm damage on social media, with about 100 customers still without power around 2 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Huntley Road, Ballina Road, McHenry Avenue and Lake Avenue. About 500 customers were without power countywide as of early Tuesday afternoon, but dozens had their power restored by 2 p.m.
Crystal Lake Public Works Director Mike Magnuson said Tuesday that there are several trees on private property. Affected homes. He said the worst damage in the town was between Lake and Ballina.
“We're still out there,” Magnussen said.
Crystal Lake resident Melissa Higby said she was without power for 40 minutes and lost some small tree branches during Monday night's storm. She added that she saw “whirlpools” in the grass, which she said had appeared during a previous major storm.
Higbee said part of a tree fell on her neighbor's home and part fell on the back fence and another neighbor's fence and shed.
The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District warned of downed trees and power lines around the area of Washington Street and Lamb Road during Monday's storm, and 54 customers were without power in the area as of Tuesday afternoon, according to ComEd maps .
A tornado warning was issued for parts of McHenry County Monday night as the storm moved through the Chicago area. The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Algonquin Fox River on Monday after a weekend of storms.
No suspected tornadoes touched down in McHenry County during Monday's storm, National Weather Service meteorologist Gino Iez said early Tuesday.
