The National Weather Service in Paducah confirmed a tornado emergency in western Hopkins County and a catastrophic, life-threatening tornado was heading toward the Dawson Springs and Charleston, Kentucky, areas.
WPSD Chief Meteorologist Trent Okerson is tracking the storm live.
It's going to be a busy night for those with Memorial Day plans, and anyone planning any outdoor activities should pay close attention to radars and alerts. If you're outdoors, make sure you have a reliable way to get warnings and know where to take shelter if a storm threatens your area. Download the free WPSD Radar app and get warnings wherever you are. If you're going to a lake or campground, have your NOAA weather radio ready as a second reliable way to get warnings.
Also, remember that if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to lightning. If a thunderstorm is approaching, get into a sturdy shelter and stay inside for 30 minutes after the last thunder.
