NEWPORT, N.C. – North Carolina residents are urged to prepare for severe weather today as thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon and evening that could bring damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy downpours.
The most intense storms could produce wind gusts capable of causing serious damage as well as large hail, according to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City. Rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches are expected in some areas, increasing the risk of flash flooding.
There is also a higher risk of rip currents south of Cape Hatteras. Highs are expected to reach 90°F in New Bern and 86°F in Manteo, with an 85% chance of thunderstorms. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas should take necessary precautions and stay informed about the latest weather conditions.
