Severe storms could bring wind damage, heavy rain, flash flooding to Philadelphia area on Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It’s another hot and humid day in the Delaware Valley on Wednesday as a few storms move through the region.

The potential for severe weather will again threaten the area tonight. A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for southwestern New Castle County and northwestern Kent County in Delaware until 9 p.m.

Lehigh and Northampton counties in northeastern Pennsylvania are under a National Weather Service flash flood warning until 11:30 p.m.

Southeast Bucks County and Northeast Philadelphia County are under a flash flood warning until 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

Philadelphia International Airport was on a ground standstill as of about 7:30 p.m., and departing flights were delayed due to weather.

According to FlightAware, the incoming flight to PHL was held up at its origin until 9 p.m. due to weather conditions, and the outgoing flight was delayed by 61 minutes or more.

The entire region was under a heat warning for much of the day. When the perceived temperature rises into the triple digits, there is a significant increase in heat-related illnesses. It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned areas, avoid sunlight and check on relatives and neighbors.

    More severe storms possible

As the cold front approaches the region, the storm will bring intense downpours and possibly severe wind gusts — which could mean another round of power outages for people in our area. Additionally, traveling in heavy rain can be dangerous.

Therefore, Wednesday is the next weather alert day.

The Storm Prediction Center lists the area as a “slight risk,” or risk level 2 out of 5, for severe weather. This means scattered severe storms are possible. We may see another night similar to Tuesday night with widespread wind damage, large hail, heavy rain, and frequent lightning.

Finally breathed a sigh of relief

good news? We are finally changing the paradigm. A cold front will slowly move through the area on Thursday, and dew points will gradually drop throughout the day. While there may be a scattered shower or two, temperatures are more manageable, with highs reaching over 80 degrees.

By Thursday night, the humidity will drop, and we'll wake up to a nice, fresh air mass Friday morning. Still, Friday is expected to be very hot, with highs reaching the 80s, but lower humidity will keep outdoor activities comfortable. Temperatures will drop back to seasonal normals through the weekend and beyond, with only scattered summer storms as humidity increases slightly starting Sunday.
