Plano Rotary Club volunteers will be lending a helping hand this weekend.
Board members met Thursday afternoon to discuss storm debris cleanup efforts near downtown on Saturday morning.
“It's difficult for the city to clean it all up and there's a lot of debris and that's where we are,” club president John Priest said. “We're a service club. We're always trying Do special projects.
Priest said the city approached them for help and the group said yes without hesitation.
Members will help cut branches and pick up debris Saturday morning.
“Unprecedented” storms in late May and early June caused more than 1,000 downed trees and debris across the city.
The head of the city's environmental waste services department told NBC 5 they collected about 100,000 cubic yards of trash in eight weeks, which is as much as the city collects in an entire year.
The second and final citywide sweep is currently underway.
Steve Fink with the city said they are still two to three weeks away from completing the cleanup and returning to normal weekly operations.
The city reminds residents to leave any remaining storm debris at collection points.
Funk estimates that 80 percent of Plano’s residential collection points are located on alleys.
Debris should not be placed in the bag.
Today is also the last day for city contractors to collect storm debris left on curbs in front yards of homes.
