    Strong storm hits Kansas, camper overturned, power outage

    WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Storms continued across Kansas Tuesday night.

    A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for counties in southwestern Kansas and parts of north-central/northwestern Kansas until 1 a.m. Wednesday.


    KSN Meteorologist Lucy Doll has been tracking storm reports Tuesday afternoon and evening:

    9:46 pm

    • Golf Ball Size Hail – 4 S Ford – Ford County

    • Wind 59 mph – 9 S Montezuma, Meade County
    • Golf Ball Size Hail – Spearville – Ford County

    9:19 pm

    • Gusty 66 mph – Seward County 4 NE Haine

    9:16 pm

    • 65 mph gusts – Haskell County Sublette

    9:11 pm

    • 63 mph wind gust – 2 ENE Goodwell, Texas, Oklahoma

    8:58 pm

    • 60 mph wind gusts – 2 ENE Goodwell, Texas, Oklahoma

    8:37 pm

    • 63 mph gust – 10 WNW Moscow, Stevens County
    • 62 mph gust – 9 SSW Kendall, Hamilton County
    • 58 mph gust – 2 NNW Ulysses, Grant County
    • 60 mph wind gusts – 1 NE Johnson City, Stanton County
    • Wind gust 64 mph – 9 NW Wilburton, Morton County

    • Wind gusts to 60 mph – Ridgefield, Morton County.

    6:17 pm

    • 65 mph wind – Almena – Norton County

    5:54 pm

    • 65 mph wind – 2 NE Norton – Norton County

    5:48 pm

    • Dust reduces visibility to 5 miles – 1 E Hill City – Graham County

    4:48 pm

    • Wind 62 mph – 1 NNW Norton – Norton County

    Temperatures drop midweek, storms possible

    Severe thunderstorms also occurred in northern Kansas earlier in the day. The storm issued multiple severe thunderstorm warnings and recorded wind gusts of 60 to 90 mph.

    The KSN Storm Track 3 weather team is also tracking severe weather reports for these storms.

    • 5 NNE Gorham – Russell County – Gusty 65 mph
    • Russell Airport – Russell County – Wind gusts 85 mph
    • 3 NNE Bunker Hill – Russell County – Gust 93 mph
    • 7 SW Sylvan Grove – Russell County – Gust 67 mph
    • Lincoln – Lincolnshire – Gust 80 mph
    • 2 SW Salina – Salina County – Gusty 58 mph
    • 5 NNW New Cambria – Saline County – Wind gusts 79 mph
    • Russell – Russell County – Downed power lines, snapped utility poles
    • 8 SW Sylvan Grove – Russell County – Two campers roll over
    • 6 SW Sylvan Grove – Russell County – Broken utility pole

    Monica Smith shared photos of storm damage at Lake Wilson with KSN News via email this morning. Her photos show an overturned camper van and a large fallen tree branch.

    “We actually had two campers overturned at Lake Wilson. Thankfully, no one was hurt and no one was in the camper. We had several power poles down throughout the county, giving us road blockages and other things like that. question.

    West of Hayes early Tuesday, the storm produced strong winds that downed tree branches and caused nearly 800 power outages. Midwest Energy reported that 168 facilities were still without power as of 10:30 a.m.

    Elsewhere, storms swept across Iowa, Illinois (including Chicago) and Indiana on Monday, triggering multiple reports of tornadoes, downing trees and power poles and knocking out power to more than 460,000 customers and businesses.
