After 18 holes of the final major championship of the year, we unexpectedly topped the Scottish leaderboard.
Daniel Brown, ranked No. 273 in the Official World Golf Ranking this week, took the overnight lead after shooting a bogey-free 65 at Royal Troon on Thursday. Brown made a late birdie to take a one-shot lead over Sean Lowry and will play in his first major this week. He is also the highest-ranked golfer to lead in the first round since 2016.
Lowry also shot a bogey-free 66 and was in good position midway through the tournament. In 2019, he won his first Grand Slam title at Royal Portrush. Golfers tied at 2 under.
Both Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy had a bad start to their week in Scotland after intense battles in North Carolina. DeChambeau opened with a 5-over 76 and McIlroy finished with a 7-over 78. Something I haven’t missed since 2019.
Tiger Woods is in trouble again, as he has been many times in recent years. Woods shot an 8-over 79 on Thursday that will likely result in him missing the cut or withdrawing from the tournament for the seventh time in his last 10 starts in a major.

Yahoo Sports' Jay Busbee on Tiger's 2024 British Open
With Tiger Woods' 2024 major season over, what's next for the most popular golfer of the past three decades? Retirement has been a topic of discussion surrounding the 15-time major champion, and following another disappointing performance at one of the sport's premier events, Jay Busby's response to the 'Big Cat' Commentary on the future and what's next for the golf icon.
Tiger ends his Open Championship win at +14
Fifteen majors and three British Opens have been etched into the golf world's collective consciousness, and while his days at the top of the leaderboard appear to be behind him, it's still a long way from arguably the best player of all time. The opportunity for great players to compete together is still there. Tiger Woods will miss the cut for the seventh time in the last 10 games – the cut line is projected to be +5 – after going 79-77 and finishing with a +14 finish.
Scheffler leads by three after 14 shots
He is the hottest player in the world, having won six of his last 10 starts, and is now 2 under after making one of the few birdies of the day on No. 14 to a score of 14 strokes.
Lowry holds the ship.
After a tough double bogey on the 11th hole, Lowry made three consecutive pars to reach 5 under, tied with Daniel Brown and remain at the top of the leaderboard.
Tiger Flash Retro Lens Production Tips
Even though Tiger Woods is going through one of the toughest major championship performances of his career, the highlights we've been accustomed to seeing for nearly three decades still pop up from time to time for Tiger Woods, including a shot into the 15th green. This is a great shot.
Sean Lowry returns to court
Shane Lowry's magic ran out at Royal Troon No. 11 on Friday. With a two-shot lead, Lowry stepped onto the tee on the 11th hole … and hit his ball deep into the thick Scottish rough. He ended up having to make an unplayable lie and throw the ball close to the green. Then he made a double-bogey putt, and Lowry tied with Daniel Brown at -5. He's still the joint leader in the Open, but with the wind picking up and what will be the toughest stretch of the race ahead, Lowry has a lot of work to do to bring it home.
What are the cut-offs for the British Open?
Cuts to the British Open are currently +3, but will likely be higher, or even higher. Below are the promotion rules for the Open.
welcome to scotland
Jordan Spieth does Jordan Spieth things at Royal Troon.
John Daly withdraws from Open Championship
Another past Open champion announced the week a week early – 1995 Open champion John Daly withdrew from this year's event after one round citing a knee injury. Daly and Ernie Els both shot +11 in the first round of the tournament.
At least we'll always have Daley's photo.
Leaderboard update: Lowry leads again
A birdie on No. 8 gave Sean Lowry the lead again in the Open. With everything going Lori's way now, and with the inclement weather on the way, it could make for a very relaxing Friday afternoon on the couch for Lori.
1. Sean Lowry, -7 (to 8) 2. Daniel Brown, -6 (3) 3. Justin Thomas, -3 (7:53 a.m. ET tipoff) T4. Xander Schauffele + seven others, -2
Tiger Woods makes birdie!
Look, it's a little sad when we're excited about Tiger Woods' birdie, but that's where we are right now. Woods hit a long shot on the par-5 sixth hole to take the lead to …+10. Uh, okay.
Scotty Scheffler's caddy has a rough day
Getting sick at work can be tough, especially when your job involves lugging heavy bags around the hills of Scotland. Ted Scott, Scotty Scheffler's caddy, was apparently battling something bad; he reportedly lay down when Scheffler wasn't actively swinging. Scheffler had played just four holes as of 6:15 a.m. ET, and Scott still had a long way to go.
Ernie Els withdraws from Open due to injury
Royal Troon will eliminate its competitors one by one in the 152nd edition of the Open. Most recent to quit: Ernie Els, 2002 and 2012 Open champion. Els withdrew before the second round citing a back injury.
On Thursday, the Big Easy was +11 and ranked second to last on the day. Els, who has three wins this season as a member of the PGA Tour Championship, remains in contention for next week's British Senior Open.
Els joins Romain Langasque, who retired Thursday after an awkward 84-yard kickoff at famed Stamps Stadium.
Shane Lowry jumps into the lead immediately
Just one hole later, Sean Lowry regained the share of the lead. He had just birdied the first hole to tie Daniel Brown at 6 under.
Tigers shot 2 times early
Well, Tiger Woods just had a double bogey on the second hole, missing the fairway and then missing the green on his approach. He's now down to over 10, with several shots above early projections of the cutoff. Not the best start.
Friday weather forecast
It doesn't look like it will rain at Royal Troon today.
Tiger Woods tees off in second round
Tiger Woods and his team have now teed off the second round at Royal Troon. Woods shot an 8-over 79 on Thursday and needs a big round today to make the cut.
While this is a familiar trend for the golf legend and there are growing calls for him to stop it, Woods dismissed those calls earlier this week. Jay Busby of Yahoo Sports wrote that while Woods “will likely never win another event on the PGA Tour,” he should still play “whenever he wants.”
Marcel Sim's actions
Marcel Siem had five birdies and one bogey on the day's first nine holes. He is now tied for fourth after bogeying the par-4 ninth.
expected cutting line
Here’s what Royal Troon’s cut looks like today.
Today, Marcel Siem has moved up 31 places on the ranking list. The six-time DP World Tour champion is currently 1 under for the week.
