Manitoba weather: Heat dome sinks in province

A ridge of high pressure over the Prairie continues to bring high temperatures to Winnipeg, much of Manitoba and northwestern Ontario on Friday.

It creates a heat dome that won't be going away anytime soon, so be prepared for higher temperatures and humidity over the weekend into early next week.

In Winnipeg, Brandon and other parts of the south, temperatures are expected to be near 30 degrees Celsius on Friday, with heat and humidity indexes in the mid-30s.

Despite the heat and humidity, it is still below the threshold required for Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) to issue a heat warning.

But regardless of whether a heat warning is issued, it's important to take appropriate precautions to reduce risks to your health.

However, heat warnings remain in place for the northwest and north-central regions on Friday. Temperature and humidity values in these areas are as high as those in the south, but the thresholds for triggering heat warnings are lower.

A cold front associated with a low over northern Quebec will dip southward over southern Manitoba today. When it collides with large amounts of moisture in the air, it can trigger thunderstorms.

If thunderstorms do develop, they may move slowly this afternoon and evening and dump up to 40-80mm of rain in southern areas.

A plume of smoke is also possible in the Northwest Territories along the Saskatchewan border today and into Saturday. Smoke from Flin Flon entered the community early this morning.

Winnipeg will be hot and humid over the weekend with some sunshine, with a brief break from the heat early next week.
