'Twister' director doesn't mention climate change: Movies shouldn't 'spread a message'
Director Lee Isaac Chung explains why his weather disaster movie made no mention of global warming.
Author: James Hibbard
Excerpt: If you were to make a movie about a tornado outbreak in 2024 never seen anything like this before, there’s a pretty convenient raison d’être there. Just ask Daisy Edgar Jones to frantically look at some Doppler radar and mutter an actual research statistic such as: “The Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society projects that by the end of the century, due to global warming, The frequency of super thunderstorms will increase by 6.6% — But nothing like this!“Suddenly your summer tornado popcorn movie has a bit of “But seriously, this Can really happened“Semi-scientific weight.
But to hear director Lee Isaac Chung tell it, even such a throwaway reference is like hitting Red Country moviegoers over the head with a DVD copy. an inconvenient truth.
“I just wanted to make sure that through the movie, we didn't feel like it was sending any message,” Chung told CNN. “I just don’t think movies should be information-driven.”
There's a scene where a local farmer, played by Maura Tierney, says storms and floods are becoming more frequent, but she doesn't mention climate change.
“I think what we're doing is showing the reality of what's going on on the ground… We don't shy away from saying things are changing,” Chung added. “I wanted to make sure we never felt like we were spreading a message, because that's certainly not what I think movies should do. I think it should be a reflection of the world.
