Thunderstorms are developing over the mountains and deserts this afternoon, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds and lightning. The chance of storms will continue until the sun goes down. Any storm that develops could produce heavy rain, severe lightning, gusty winds, small hail and flash flooding.

The beach hazard statement will end at 9pm and although waves will weaken tomorrow, the risk of rip currents remains high.

Tomorrow, a ridge of high pressure across the Four Corners will spread westward and expand northward, bringing higher temperatures but also reduced monsoon flows. There is a small chance of a mountain storm tomorrow and the weekend will be drier but hotter.

Temperatures will be 5 to 10 degrees above average Friday through Sunday, ranging from 80 degrees in warmer coastal areas to 90 to 100 degrees in the inland mountains and as high as 118 degrees in desert areas. The risk of heat will rise again away from the coast and precautions should be taken to stay cool and never leave children or pets in cars.

A severe heat warning for desert areas will be in effect from 11 a.m. Friday to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Heat warnings will be in effect for inland valleys and mountains during the same period.

Clouds will continue to form along the coast and in some inland areas during the night and morning, gradually clearing up to clear skies, but stubborn clouds may develop over some beaches.

Temperatures will drop slightly next week and be closer to average, but the monsoon flow will strengthen again from Monday. This will bring higher humidity and the potential for isolated storms over the mountains and deserts Thursday afternoon and evening.

Looking ahead, the hot and humid weather may ease somewhat by late July to early August.

Tips for staying safe in the heat:
If you have outdoor pets, plan to provide them with safe shelter and cool water. Remember, a car can turn into an oven in a matter of minutes, check the back seat before getting out, and never leave children or pets in the car. Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and stay hydrated! Avoid strenuous outdoor activities, enjoy air conditioning when possible, and if you work in hot weather, make sure to take frequent breaks and drink water every 15 minutes.

    Friday's high:
    Coast: 73-83°
    Inland: 88-99°
    Mountain range: 87-101°
    Desert: 111-115°
