Basant Sharma, a resident of Noida's Sector 122, was surprised to find that his electricity bill exceeded Rs 4 crore for three consecutive months, which was an unprecedented billing anomaly. The bill, issued to his wife Priyanka Sharma, covers usage from April 9 to July 18, totaling Rs 4,02,31,842.31. Sharma, who is employed by the Railways and was undergoing formal training in Shimla, was informed of the bill through an SMS notification on Thursday, setting a deadline of July 24 for payment.
The staggering amount prompted Sharma to take immediate action and contact the local electricity distribution company. They blamed the inflated bill on a meter reading error and assured Sharma that the discrepancy would be corrected immediately. The house is currently being rented out and the tenant, who primarily works from home, is the only occupant during the billing cycle, Sharma explained, adding that consumption mainly involves basic appliances.
Shivam Tripathi, executive engineer in charge of the district, admitted the billing error and stressed that such incidents were rare. Tripathi said the copy showed an error and he had directed his staff to re-read the meter and issue a revised bill after receiving the complaint.
