    summary

Trade winds will gradually increase over the next few days, with a steady pattern of windward showers dominating. A moving batch of moisture in the trade winds will lead to an increase in showers Monday night and Tuesday. Trade winds are expected to increase on Wednesday and Thursday, bringing dry conditions.

    discuss

There will be steady, moderate to locally breezy trade winds tomorrow. About 1300 miles north of the state there is a fairly solid 1033 mb. A trough of low pressure south of the high-voltage line makes the pressure gradient and associated trade winds slightly weaker than expected from the high-voltage line. As the troughs fill up, the trade winds will gradually increase. The mid-mountain ridge over the islands will maintain stable conditions, with dry air slowly moving into the region from the east as a shallow batch of moisture moves westward today. Moderate rainfall will be concentrated on windward slopes, with leeward slopes expected to be mostly dry. The exceptions will be the Kona slopes on the Big Island, where clouds and showers will linger each afternoon, while leeward Kauai could see a few brief showers this afternoon.
Shower activity will increase Monday night and Tuesday as another batch of moisture moves into the trade. This area will be deeper than the area that passed yesterday, indicating a higher chance of showers, especially in windward areas. The leeward slopes of the Big Island, and possibly Haleakala, may become active Tuesday afternoon, while leeward areas elsewhere will experience some showers. Mid-level troughs will be accompanied by moisture, but conditions aloft will generally remain stable, minimizing the chance of heavy rainfall.
Wednesday and Thursday will bring drier conditions and stronger trade winds as a mid-level trough removes and an area of high pressure establishes to the north. Windward rainfall is expected to be minimal and dry in most leeward areas.

    aviation

Moderate trading will remain in place over the next few days. Clouds and showers will favor windward areas and mountains and overnight. Additionally, clouds and showers appear on the Kona slopes of the Big Island every afternoon. Some showers may bring brief MVFR conditions. Otherwise, VFR shall prevail.
No AIRMET is currently in effect.

    ocean

A high pressure system is strengthening north of the Hawaiian Islands, and trade winds will remain in the fresh to locally strong range for much of the week. Trade wind speeds will be sufficient to support Small Craft Advisory (SCA) conditions in windy waters and waterways near Maui and the Big Island. The SCA's hours were extended in time until Tuesday. More water may be added later this week as wind speeds increase.
The background south swell pulse of energy is expected to continue, with waves remaining below average for much of the week. Small, choppy waves will increase along the eastward coast as locally strong trade winds increase over the next few days.
King tides will peak this afternoon, with local tide gauges showing water levels still about half a foot above guidance and at least 1 foot above the mean high water (MHHW) threshold for Hilo, Kahului and Honolulu. A Coastal Flood Statement for isolated minor flooding remains in effect Monday evening.

    fire weather

Typical summer trade wind weather patterns will continue into Monday, followed by wetter conditions Monday night and Tuesday. On Wednesday and Thursday, trade winds will strengthen and conditions will become dry and stable. This could cause some fire weather issues.

    HFO Observations/Warnings/Recommendations

A small craft advisory is in effect for Maalaea Bay, Pailolo Channel, Alenuihaha Channel, leeward waters of the Big Island, and waters southeast of the Big Island until 6 p.m. HST Tuesday.
