Unusually mild weather is expected to continue through the weekend, with below-normal temperatures and intermittent showers possible as early as Saturday, but more likely late Saturday night into early Sunday morning.
What's the weather like this weekend?
Friday afternoon will be another pleasant one, with daytime highs in the 80s across the North, plenty of sunshine and a northeasterly wind of 5 to 10 mph. This pattern will allow a storm system to approach the state this weekend and increase the chance of showers and storms. Some storm activity could affect the far west Saturday morning before weakening as it moves eastward by midday into the afternoon. Some of that activity could continue into Saturday afternoon in northeastern Oklahoma. Chances are expected to be slightly higher Saturday night into early Sunday morning. However, no severe weather is expected.
Upper air currents support a high pressure ridge to our west and a developing mid-level trough across the Central Plains. This trough will remain disconnected from upper-level airflow for a few days before moving eastwards by the middle of next week.
This pattern will likely bring showers and storms with associated clouds, which will keep our daytime highs well below seasonal averages. Although there will be some low levels of moisture this weekend, there won't be significant heat index values. A few additional showers or storms are possible early next week, mainly in the easternmost parts of the region, until a mid-level trough moves eastward. We expect July temperatures and humidity to return to normal by the end of next week.
EMSA Thermal Safety Tips:
- Prehydration is key to preventing heat-related illnesses. Drink plenty of water or electrolyte-replenishing drinks before and during prolonged exposure to summer heat.
- If working outdoors, wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and rest in the shade.
- Contains no alcohol or caffeine.
- If you don't have air conditioning, find a cooling station or public space during the day (such as a library or mall).
- Don't limit the use of air conditioning.
- If working outdoors, use a buddy system and check on older neighbors.
- Keep your phone with you at all times when you are outdoors, including while walking, running errands, doing yard work, or during sports and physical activities.
