DENVER — Cooler weather is in store for the metro and across Colorado this weekend, with afternoon high temperatures well below average, dropping into the 80s on both Saturday and Sunday.

“We're going to have some clouds, some rain, but not necessarily the severe storms that we see this time of year,” said 7 Denver meteorologist Stacey Donaldson. “We're expected to have some every day this weekend. Stormy, Sunday afternoon highs will be much cooler, with highs only in the low 80s.”

Scattered rain and thunderstorms are possible in the Denver metro area on Friday, with the possibility of severe storms in the Northeast Plains ahead of cooler temperatures this weekend.

Temperatures will be below average in Denver on Saturday, with cooler conditions expected on Sunday.

Large hail is possible in the state's far northeast between 3 and 7 p.m., before the threat of severe weather arrives, making for a good start to Saturday.

At 12:45 p.m., a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for parts of Phillips County, calling for storms near Holyoke that could drop quarter-size hail.

“We'll wake up to temperatures in the 60s, with a high of only 85 expected in Denver on Saturday, with scattered storms in the afternoon,” Donaldson added.

While Denver will see rain and scattered storms on Friday, the threat of severe weather remains in the plains of far northeastern Colorado.

A cold front pushed temperatures even lower on Sunday, keeping temperatures in the mid-80s through at least Wednesday.

Increased cloud cover, especially in the morning, should help keep temperatures mild. Brief periods of heavy rain are possible in some isolated areas this weekend, but the threat of severe weather remains low, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Boulder.

After Friday's high temperatures near 90 degrees, Denver will warm to 85 degrees on Saturday and 80 degrees on Sunday. Monday's afternoon high in Denver will remain around 82 degrees.
