Retired soldier Bhushan Kumar allegedly brutally murdered his family as they slept and hacked his father with an axe
A military veteran allegedly hacked to death six family members, including his mother, a nephew and two nieces, over a land dispute in Naringar, police said on Monday.
They said he also tried to burn the body at home after committing the crime.
The incident took place in Lath village of Naringal on Sunday night, they said.
A niece who was seriously injured in the attack succumbed to her injuries at PGIMER in Chandigarh, police said.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed that an alleged land dispute between the two brothers led to the incident.
The deceased have been identified as Kumar's mother Saroopi Devi (65), brother Harish Kumar (35), sister-in-law Sonia (32) and their three children – Pari (7), Yashika (5) and Mayank (6 months)).
The accused's father, Om Prakash, was seriously injured when he tried to stop Kumar from killing his family members. However, police said he managed to notify his neighbors.
Police said Prakash was undergoing treatment at Narangarh Civil Hospital.
Rampal Inspector SHO Naraingarh said that six persons died in the incident. Police have formed a team to arrest the accused, who fled the spot after allegedly committing murder.
The teams are conducting raids at several locations, police said, adding that further investigation into the case was on.
Police also interviewed two people said to be close to the accused.
Dr Mukesh Kumar, Resident Medical Officer of Ambala Cantonment Civil Hospital, said the police brought five partially burnt bodies around 7 am on Monday. They also found wounds on their bodies, he said.
The autopsies of the five bodies are being carried out at the Ambala Cantonment Civil Hospital.
