Team GB rents air-conditioned rooms in Olympic Village Paris The organizers have chosen an environmentally friendly under-floor system as their standard cooling method.
With temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius in Paris this week, controlling heat is a major performance consideration, but organizers have decided not to fully air-condition the athletes' buildings, which will become permanent homes after the Games.
The built-in system uses river water pumped through pipes under the floor, and although this promises to provide cool air in hot weather conditions and heat in winter, the UK, USA Teams such as Australia and Australia also want traditional air conditioning.
The 2024 Winter Olympics in Paris have agreed to provide temporary air-conditioning equipment, but the equipment must be rented from organizers through a so-called “price list” that countries can use for a host of “extra services” beyond core facilities and services.
There are more than 7,000 rooms in the Olympic Village and around 2,500 air-conditioning units have now been added on request, meaning British athletes are considered one of the few to enjoy a cooler living environment.
british team The decision to make air conditioning a priority was made more than a year ago for simple performance reasons, with heat disrupting sleep considered a major concern for athletes. While less environmentally friendly than relying solely on underfloor cooling systems, the UK team noted the temporary and multi-purpose nature of the air conditioning units installed.
Australian Olympic Committee chief executive Matt Carroll said “we appreciate the concept of removing air conditioning due to the carbon footprint”, but added “this is a high-performance Olympics and we are not going on a picnic”.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo appeared to rule out the use of air conditioning in March 2023, saying: “I have great respect for the comfort of athletes, but I think more about human survival.”
Paris 2024 chief executive Tony Estanguet said they had “found a good compromise between providing the right temperature and reducing carbon emissions”.
The Paris Olympics aims to reduce its total carbon emissions to half that of previous editions.

If Mayor Hidalgo is worried about hotter summers, surely the answer is more air conditioning, not less?
