The Biden administration announced on Monday that it would direct billions of dollars to various parts of the country to advance programs related to climate change.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said on Monday it would allocate a total of $4.3 billion to help fund 25 applicants in 30 states to establish “community-driven” climate plans. The projects include the construction of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, funding to help local governments accelerate green energy site selection and plans to increase the adoption of heat pumps. “President Biden’s climate pollution reduction grants put local governments in the driver’s seat to develop climate solutions that work for their communities,” John Podesta, senior adviser to the president for international climate policy, said of the funding. “ These grants will help state and local governments improve the air quality and health of their communities while accelerating progress toward America’s climate goals.”
The climate pollution reduction grant program was established under the Inflation Reduction Act, President Joe Biden's massive climate law that passed Congress without a Republican vote. The 25 winning applications were selected from about 300 applications and the entire process was “intended to be fair and equitable,” the EPA said.
Specific projects funded under the funding announced Monday include a plan to increase the use of stack pumps in New England and Alaska, industrial decarbonization in Pennsylvania and a multi-purpose project to enhance electric vehicle charging infrastructure along the I-95 corridor.
