Commuters in Mumbai started walking on the railway tracks to reach their offices after local train services were disrupted on Wednesday (July 24). Central Railway said a bamboo structure fell on an overhead power line between Sion and Matunga stations, causing the train to be hit.
Due to the delay, many passengers chose to get off the stationary local trains and walk along the tracks. As a result, local express train services were held up between the two stations for nearly an hour, causing difficulties for commuters and others.
Swapnil Nila, chief public relations officer of Central Railway, said: “At around 7.25 am, the UP Express (bound for Chhatrapati Shivaji… A bamboo structure erected around a building near the Maharaj Terminus railway line collapsed. Due to the incident, local express train services on the main line were hampered as they had to switch off the power to the overhead wires to clear the bamboo that fell on them. . The line resumed service at 8:20 a.m.
Local trains are considered the lifeline of Mumbai. More than 70 lakh commuters use services operated by Central and Western Railways. Local trains operated by Central Railway carry around 3.5 million suburban commuters daily through 1,810 suburban services across four corridors: Main Line, Harbor Line, Cross-Harbor Line and Belapur-Ulam Line.
