LAS VEGAS — After another morning with temperatures in the high 80s and lows in the low 90s at sunrise, humidity remained the same today with a high of 111 degrees. The heat warning in Las Vegas lasts until 11 p.m., and the chance of a storm has increased from 30% at noon to 40% this afternoon; their power will remain at 30% tonight and 20% after midnight. Monsoon showers will bring the threat of lightning and gusty winds tomorrow, but the chance is small at 20%. On Thursday, the temperature in Las Vegas remained as high as 112 degrees, with partly cloudy skies and rising humidity. Friday's sweltering heat abated slightly, with sunny skies and no storms, with a high of 111 degrees and southwest winds of 15-30 mph. Winds are back on Saturday with southwesterly winds of 15-30 mph during the day. Humidity dropped significantly this weekend, with temperatures starting in the upper 80s on Saturday but reaching a high of 107 degrees in the afternoon. Sunday will be equally dry, with temperatures in the 80s at dawn and near 106 in the afternoon, with winds limited to 10-20 mph. Highs jump from 106° on Monday to 110° on Tuesday and are likely to be between 110° and 115° next Wednesday (July 31) through the first week of August. Humidity is likely to return in early August, so a 20% chance of storms is also on the menu.

To beat the heat, remember to avoid direct sunlight and the hottest temperatures of the day, generally between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Colored clothes and hats and sunscreen. Avoid excess caffeine and alcohol. Be aware of those who are susceptible to heat illness, including young children, the elderly, and people with health conditions or taking medications that may predispose to heat illness. Keep an eye on pets to make sure they have fresh water and are not overtired. The UV index is high, so remember to use sunscreen and carry a hat; at this time of year, sunburn can occur within 15 to 20 minutes, from late morning to mid-afternoon.
