Cooler weather is expected this weekend

Today will be our transition day into cooler weather for the weekend as a ridge of high pressure decides to back off, allowing cooler air to filter in.

Today will still be warm and muggy, but daytime highs will be a few degrees cooler and slightly above average. Monsoon humidity will decrease in the coming days, reducing the likelihood of thunderstorms in the mountains.

The Desert Heat Warning will end at 8pm today. Desert highs will rise to 118 degrees, with warm nights ahead in the 80s and 90s.

By Sunday, temperatures will plummet by 5 to 10 degrees, with highs slightly below average! Temperatures are expected to be around 70 degrees in coastal areas, around 80 degrees in inland mountainous areas, and below 110 degrees in desert areas.

Breezy winds will be expected from now through Saturday, especially in the mountains and deserts, with westerly winds of 35 to 50 mph possible. Fire danger is expected to increase due to hot weather and strong winds.

This weekend, as the trough of low pressure moves southward, cooler, drier air will move in, pushing the dominant ridge of high pressure and monsoon moisture to the east.

The marine layer will also expand further inland this weekend, clearing back to the coast each day.

By the end of next week, the weather will be warmer, the monsoon will return, humidity will rise again, and mountain and desert storms are possible over the weekend.

    Friday's highs:
    Coast: 75-86°
    Inland: 85-98°
    Mountain: 90-100°
    Desert: 114-118°
