HOLLAND, Miss. (WJRT) – Researchers at Central Michigan University and several other universities are studying the impact of Lake Michigan on the development of thunderstorms in Western Michigan.
Part of the research includes the release of 600 weather balloons over the Dutch region on Friday.
The balloons use mobile radar, lidar and six weather stations to measure data that will lead to better forecasts in the future.
“We really wanted to understand the complete shift in temperature, humidity, wind, and how those changes started over the lake and moved inland through the region,” said lead researcher Jason Keeler of Carnegie Mellon University. said the doctor.
The week-long study featured the work of scientists and more than 20 undergraduate students.
The project is funded by nearly $2.5 million from the National Science Foundation.
