American newlyweds Kathy and Warner Haley traveled to Montego Bay, Jamaica for their honeymoon. They are now trapped in the country as Cyclone Beryl approaches.
They headed to Sangster International Airport (MBJ) at around 12 noon local time on Tuesday to find their way home, but said they were unable to catch a flight to anywhere in the United States.
Casey Haley posted on Facebook that the airport looked “like something out of an apocalyptic movie.”
“After we got to the airport, we went to a grocery store to buy some water and some supplies, and the locals were going crazy, so that's what worried us,” she said.
Warner Haley said the grocery store had run out of food and the line “went to the back of the store.” They ended up leaving the store without buying anything because they were worried that taxis from the airport would get them into trouble.
They are scheduled to fly home on Saturday.
“Now we have to prepare for this,” Warner Haley said. “We are confident we will be taken care of. What is going to happen is what is going to happen. We will do our best and take every possible precaution.
The couple estimated that about 200 people may still be inside the hotel after many travelers left on Monday. They added that their resort had not informed them of the safety plan.
The couple told CNN in an interview Wednesday morning that the hotel told them the remaining guests would meet in a conference room.
The couple agreed that the experience brought them closer together. “Pressure does test the relationship,” Warner added.
