The United States averages approximately 10,000 thunderstorms, 5,000 floods, 1,300 tornadoes, and 2 Atlantic hurricanes each year, as well as massive droughts and wildfires. Weather, water and climate events cause an average of approximately 650 deaths and $15 billion in damage each year, with approximately 90% caused by presidentially declared disasters. About one-third of the U.S. economy (approximately $3 trillion) is highly sensitive to weather and climate. The National Weather Service (NWS) provides weather, hydrological, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters, and ocean areas to protect life and property and promote the national economy.
NWS is currently charting a path to becoming a more nimble, flexible and mobile agency that works closely with key decision makers. Learn more at www.noaa.gov/nwstransformation
