RAPID CITY, S.D. — Heat, smoke and potentially severe storms are expected to affect Rapid City and much of South Dakota this weekend. Temperatures will rise significantly today, with temperatures in the 90s and smoke and haze returning from west to east.

Isolated severe storms are possible this afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service in Rapid City. Although confidence in the development of these storms is low, any storms that do occur are likely to occur in the late afternoon to early overnight hours. Major concerns include wind gusts of 60 mph or more.

A similar situation is expected on Sunday. However, the chance of strong to severe thunderstorms will increase, especially east of the Black Hills. The most likely time for severe weather on Sunday is from the afternoon to early evening. Major hazards include wind gusts of 60 mph or more and hail at least quarter-sized.

Dry conditions are forecast for Monday as the region begins a hot and dry week. Highs will remain in the mid-80s to low 90s with clear skies and low humidity.

Residents are advised to pay close attention to weather dynamics and prepare for rapidly changing conditions. The National Weather Service stresses the importance of having a plan of action if severe weather is approaching.

The detailed forecast for Rapid City calls for temperatures of 85°F today, 86°F on Sunday, and a high of 98°F on Monday. Smoke and haze are expected to reduce air quality over the weekend. By Tuesday, temperatures will drop slightly into the upper 70s and lower 80s, with showers and thunderstorms possible into midweek.

Prolonged periods of hot and smoky weather can pose health risks, especially for vulnerable groups. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during the hottest periods and prepare for possible power outages caused by storm activity.
