United States Christmas Travel Weather Forecast

Weather over the Plains, Midwest and parts of the South will severely impact travel conditions over Christmas. After the festival, a slow-moving storm system will increase the chance of flooding in the Northeast.

According to AAA's annual forecast, more than 115 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles during the Christmas and New Year's holidays. This is the second-highest number since AAA began making forecasts 23 years ago.

With that in mind, here are some key takeaways about the weather forecast for those traveling by road or air, followed by the forecast maps we look at each day.

-Storm systems from the Rockies to the Plains, Midwest and South will be the main cause of any weather-related delays during the Christmas season.

-This major storm is approaching and could bring light rain to parts of the Great Lakes and interior Northeast this weekend.

-After Christmas, the aforementioned storms will move into the Northeast and upper Midwest. This will increase the chance of rainfall along the East Coast. Meanwhile, areas from Northern California to the Pacific Northwest will see an increased chance of rain and mountain snow as the Pacific storm approaches, especially into Wednesday.
