The Chinese Academy of Sciences found that in late winter 2023, the Antarctic cold current broke records during a global heat wave, something we have never heard from mainstream media.

A new study published in the online journal PhysOrg shows “unexpected extreme cold events in Antarctica” in 2023 Advances in Atmospheric Science.

“Record-breaking low temperatures were observed across our network of automatic weather stations (AWS) and at other locations in the region,” said Matthew A. Lazzara of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Antarctic Meteorological Research and Data Center. “These phases were characterized by new low temperature records recorded by both artificial and automated weather stations from East Antarctica, the Ross Ice Shelf, West Antarctica to the Antarctic Peninsula.”

Kunlun Station recorded the lowest temperature ever observed at -79.4°C, nearly 5°C lower than the old record.

“These extreme cold events are unprecedented and have a significant impact on operations,” said David E. Mikolajczyk, corresponding author of the study.
