The victim's body was found in the yard of her home while she was sleeping at the time of the incident.
Police investigating the April 24 rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, found that the teenage girl sexually assaulted and then killed her after watching pornographic videos on her phone. The mother and his two sisters helped cover up the truth, an official said.
He said on Saturday that police interrogated 50 people, subjected the accused to rigorous interrogation and based on technical evidence, cracked the case and detained the victim's 13-year-old brother, their mother and 17- and 18-year-old sisters.
Providing details of the case, Police Commissioner Vivek Singh said, “On April 24, a 9-year-old girl was raped and strangled to death within the premises of Jawa Police Station. Subsequently, the police registered a case and started investigation.”
He said: “The victim's body was found in the yard of her home and she was sleeping at the time of the incident.”
After close interrogation of the family members, it was discovered that the victim's 13-year-old brother slept next to her at night. He said investigations revealed the teenage boy raped his sister after watching pornographic videos on his mobile phone.
When the victim threatened to tell their father about the incident, the boy strangled her and later woke his mother, to whom he confided. She then discovered the victim was still alive. Singh said the accused, seeing this, strangled her again.
At the same time, his two sisters also woke up. They both changed beds and then notified the police to mislead the investigation. But after repeated interrogations, they finally admitted their crimes.
The official said further legal steps were being taken after the boy, his two sisters and mother were detained.
On the morning of April 24, the police received information that the girl’s body was lying in the yard of the house. Evidence related to rape and murder was found in the autopsy report and an SIT team was formed to investigate,” Singh said.
In an attempt to mislead investigators, the family told police the girl died after being bitten by a venomous insect, he said.
He said an investigation showed no sign of anyone entering the house and the family denied hearing any noises during the night.
After collecting technical evidence and interrogating 50 people, the police discovered that the family members' statements had changed many times. Based on suspicion, they were severely interrogated and later they confessed to the crime,” the SP said.
