The Assam Chief Minister, speaking on the first day of the two-day district commissioners' meeting, called on the district councils to convert their districts into “administrative pivots” to ensure easy welfare disbursement. He urged them to focus on leveraging the region’s unique strengths and contribute to the overall growth of the state.
Sarma also announced that as part of the country's decentralization policy, the newly established streets will begin operating on October 2. A core group will be established at the state level to assist districts and counties in street-related work.
The chief minister directed the district councils to monitor the construction of government buildings within their jurisdictions and prioritize the completion of health, education and anganwadi centres, which he said are crucial for development. In addition, Sarma directed the district councils to distribute flood recovery grants by August 12 and to hold regular meetings with the Guardian Minister, preferably every two weeks.
In terms of security protocols, Sarma stipulated that the convoy he would visit in the areas should not exceed 10 vehicles, including those of the district council and the police inspector general. He also congratulated the district council for successfully managing the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The two-day meeting will conclude on Tuesday with Sarma scheduled to review the progress of ongoing welfare projects in collaboration with ministers, senior officials and district councils.
