WHITE SULFUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — The weather is improving at Cleveland Browns training camp.
Rain is forecast for the area around The Greenbrier for much of Monday. These include some severe thunderstorm threats, especially in the afternoon.
That has led the Browns to push practice to 8:45 a.m. in an attempt to avoid at least some of the showers. Of course, by that time it was raining.
Monday is also the day the Browns put their pads back on for the first time. This won't be your dad or grandpa's first padded practice, though, so don't go too far in terms of high contact.
Stay tuned here for key updates from the Browns' fourth training camp start on Monday, as well as anything important head coach Kevin Stefanski has to say.
Kevin Stefanski on adjusting training due to rain
The Browns were originally scheduled to practice at 11 a.m., but they moved it up to 8:45 a.m. and ended at 9:50 a.m.
Practice has also been moved from grass to a synthetic field located at the foot of the complex’s steep hill.
“Yeah, I'm really glad we were able to adjust, you know,” Stefanski said. Change your schedule and get everything ready. I think they did a great job. I think the players did a great job adjusting. That's the name of the game. We're going to continue to do that as needed, but do our job, and adjust some different things, but make sure we do our job.
Myles Garrett continues to 'accelerate' but hasn't started practice yet
After the Browns' 50-minute practice Monday, defensive end Myles Garrett spent a lot of time with the training staff doing various running and agility drills. The reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year did not practice formally in training camp, although he participated in a few drills during practice.
Garrett is not on any disabled lists, meaning he has passed his physical. While he sprained his right hamstring on the final day of minicamp in June, there's no sign it's a long-term issue.
Mike Hall Jr., Davander Jones, Za'Darius Smith did not practice
Rookie Mike Hall Jr., sophomore offensive tackle Davande Jones and defensive end Za'Darius Smith all missed Monday's practice. Smith was the only one to give reasons, and they were all personal.
Stefanski said neither Hall nor Jones were injured. Otherwise he would just say, “No, they'll be back soon. It's all good.”
Browns sign linebacker Zach Johnson, place Brian Allen on injured reserve
The Browns made roster changes before Monday's practice. They signed linebacker Zach Johnson while placing linebacker/linebacker Brian Allen on injured reserve.
Allen left Saturday's practice with a calf injury. Injuries have been an issue for him throughout his career with the Los Angeles Rams.
Jerome Ford returns to training camp after birth of baby
Running back Jerome Ford returned to practice Monday. He missed the first three practices due to what he called “personal reasons.”
After training, Stefanski confirmed Ford had a newfound “happiness.” He wouldn't go into details, saying only that he wanted Ford to do it himself.
