The Chicago area is headed for another round of summer weather in the coming days, with warmer temperatures, rising humidity and the threat of severe weather expected.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, the Chicago area faces a “marginal” risk of severe weather over the next three days, although the NBC 5 storm team has determined that one day is most likely to produce heavy rain and thunderstorms.
In addition to stormy weather, temperatures are expected to rise into the upper 80s to lower 90s for much of the work week, with humidity causing the heat index to rise over the next few days.
Here's what you need to know.
Monday night
After a stormy morning brought heavy rain to the Chicago area, there is another threat of scattered showers and storms late Monday afternoon and evening.
While widespread severe storms are not expected, any developing storms are likely to intensify into the strong to severe category, with gusty winds and heavy rain being the main threats.
Dew points are expected to rise into the upper 60s and lower 70s, with high temperatures reaching the low to mid 80s across the region.
tuesday morning
The weather is expected to be mostly sunny Tuesday morning, although low temperatures are likely to be in the upper 60s and lower 70s. Temperatures are expected to climb quickly Tuesday morning along with humidity.
tuesday afternoon
A high-pressure dome will keep heavy showers and storms away from much of Chicago during the afternoon, but the area remains at a “marginal” risk of severe weather if any glitches occur.
Parts of DeKalb and LaSalle counties actually face a “slight risk” of severe storms, with the threat of heavy rain and gusty winds more likely in the afternoon, according to forecast models.
Highs are expected to approach 90 degrees in some areas on Tuesday, with dew points pushing the heat index even higher.
Wednesday
The biggest severe weather threat for the Chicago area this week will be Wednesday, with the possibility of widespread showers and storms in the afternoon.
Heat and humidity will once again be the theme for much of the day, with highs in the mid-90s and heat indices near the 90s in most areas.
A marginal risk for severe weather exists, with heavy rain, gusty winds, hail and a non-zero tornado risk all in the forecast, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
Thursday
On the last really warm day of the week, there will be a greater chance of showers and thunderstorms, with highs in the upper 80s and lows in the 90s.
After Thursday, temperatures will drop slightly to around 80 degrees on Friday and into the weekend, NBC 5 Storm Team reports.
