Huge hail and strong winds reported Wednesday from Texas to Nebraska
Another round of severe thunderstorms hit the south-central Plains on Wednesday. Grapefruit-sized hail (4.5 inches in diameter) was reported in parts of western Kansas, while softball-sized hail (4 inches in diameter) was reported in parts of the Texas Panhandle. The storm near Prineville, Kansas, also brought wind gusts of up to 83 mph. Additionally, a dozen brief tornadoes were reported, but no major damage has been reported in the area.
Severe storms in central U.S. remain problematic
There have been no severe weather reports across the United States for more than a week, and that trend will continue Thursday, with much of the central United States facing dangerous storms. The worst of it is likely to be concentrated in western North Texas, including the Fort Worth area, but areas from Wisconsin and Michigan to Louisiana and Mississippi could see storms that produce tornadoes, damaging wind gusts and Big hail.
Heavy rain could worsen flooding in Texas
People in parts of eastern Texas have been told to evacuate as rivers leave their banks. Flooding may increase as heavy rainfall increases in the same area. Flood watches cover much of Central and East Texas, from Waco to Houston. Parts of Louisiana are also included. Remember, it is never safe to drive through flood water.
