With the possibility of a tropical depression forming in the Atlantic later this week, all eyes are on the forecast for Volusia and Flagler counties and throughout the Sunshine State.
Melbourne's National Weather Service meteorologist Megan Tollefson said while it was too early to tell what, if any, local impact the development of the tropical wave might have, more rain was expected this week. and extreme heat.
Here are this week’s predictions:
What's the latest on tropical systems?
There is a moderate chance of tropical wave development near the Leeward Islands this week, according to the latest report from the National Hurricane Center.
A tropical depression may form later this week.
While the colored areas on the forecast map may look like a hurricane center's “cone of concern,” the orange areas on the agency's Tropical Outlook map actually represent areas where tropical cyclones are likely to develop.
The term tropical cyclone covers everything from depressions to hurricanes.
Forecasters encourage Florida residents to monitor the system carefully.
If it does intensify, the next named storm this season will be Debbie.
Will Volusia, Flagler State see more rain and extreme heat this week?
Scattered thunderstorms are expected each afternoon and will continue throughout the week and into the weekend, according to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service in Melbourne.
The National Weather Service said stronger storms with gusty winds, frequent lightning and heavy rains are possible, especially on Tuesday.
On top of that, muggy weather is expected in mid to late week due to higher relative humidity and warmer temperatures. The peak heat index is expected to reach 107 degrees by mid-week afternoon and as high as 110 degrees by the weekend.
“We're really going to keep our typical summer pattern here in Florida with the possibility of scattered storms and a 40%-60% chance of showers across the region through Sunday,” Tollefson said.
Temperatures are expected to rise by the end of the week, Tollefson said.
“We're expecting highs to be in the mid-90s, so combined with the increase in humidity, we could see a peak heat index Thursday into Friday in the 105-degree range, and then potentially between 105 and 110 degrees. So , the risk of heat-related effects will be increased this weekend. It is important to stay well hydrated and take frequent breaks when out and about for extended periods of time.
The low to moderate risk of hazardous rip currents is expected to continue throughout the week.
When will a tropical system impact Volusia-Flagler?
Conditions remained highly uncertain Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
Environmental conditions are expected to be favorable for the formation of a tropical depression later this week with the system located near the Greater Antilles or Bahamas, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The 7-day chance of formation is medium at 50%.
“There's still quite a bit of uncertainty about the development, the track, the intensity, there's a lot of uncertainty in general,” Tollefson said. “It's too early to say what impact, if any, this system will have on east-central Florida. Based on current guidance, any sort of impact, if it occurs, won't be until the end of this week or early next week.” will begin.
In the meantime, people in the area should monitor forecast updates and make sure they are prepared for potential storms, she said.
“We encourage people to stay informed about the forecast and rely on reliable sources of information. This is a good reminder to have a hurricane plan and have an emergency supply kit ready just in case something happens.
