What was the climate like during the most recent reporting period?

The NWS Metro Atlanta Climate Summary is now updated with data for June 2024.

In an article titled “What is the difference between climate and weather?”, the National Oceanic Administration describes the difference as follows:

“Weather is what you see outside on any given day. For example, it could be 75 degrees and sunny, or it could be 20 degrees and snowing. That's the weather.

“Climate is the average of that weather. For example, it might be snowy in January in the Northeast and hot and humid in July in the Southeast. That's what climate is. Climate records also include extremes, such as record high temperatures or record rainfall amount. If you've ever heard your local meteorologist say “Today we hit a record high for the day,” she was talking about a climate record.

“So when we talk about climate change, we're talking about changes in long-term averages of daily weather. In most places, weather changes every minute, every hour, every day, and seasonally. However, climate is a function of time and space. Weather averages.

Last month's climate report for the Atlanta area showed how far off the average temperatures were for the month. The average temperature on a given date is the average over a 30-year period.

What does the National Weather Service do?

The National Weather Service (NWS) is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

NWS describes its role as follows:

“The National Weather Service (NWS) provides weather, water and climate forecasts and warnings to the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas to protect life and property and strengthen the national economy.

“These services include forecasts and observations, warnings, impact-based decision support services and education, in an effort to create an all-weather nation. The ultimate goal is to create a society that is prepared for and responds to weather, water and climate events.
