Warren County, Mississippi suffers storm damage
JACKSON, Mississippi — Crews made significant progress restoring power after thunderstorms brought heavy rain, hail, lightning strikes and strong winds to Entergy Mississippi's service area Monday night. Another storm hit the service area Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, causing more power outages. Crews have been working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. As of 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, crews had restored power to more than 55,900 customers, with an additional 5,420 customers without power.
The Vicksburg, Brookhaven and Natchez areas suffered the most damage, with Magee being severely impacted by today's storm. Some power outages will continue into tomorrow. So far, damage assessments have determined damage to 111 utility poles, 41 transformers and 66 cross arms, and found more than 22 miles of downed power lines. The damage assessment will be completed tomorrow afternoon.
A crew of 760 damage assessors, vegetation crews, line workers and support personnel have been working hard to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.
If power has been restored to your area and you are without power, check for damage to the electrical equipment in your home or business. If the power is out and the electrical equipment is not damaged, please call 1-800-9OUTAGE, 1-800-968-8243.
Entergy restoration crews were unable to restore power to locations where the meter base, conduits or weather heads (metal tubes extending up from a building with cables inside) were damaged. As with any weather event, please heed the following safety tips:
- Live wires can be deadly. Stay away from downed power lines. Please call 1 800-9OUTAGE or 1-800-
968-8243 Report downed or hanging power lines, damaged or downed utility poles or other damaged equipment.
- Do not trim trees or clear debris from or near downed power lines. Only power company workers or their contractors can clear trees or branches that are touching power lines. Again, stay away from downed power lines.
- Stay away from areas where workers are working. There are always dangers with mobile devices, as well as the potential for construction materials, limbs or overhead wires to fall to the ground.
- If you plan to use a generator for temporary power, call a licensed electrician and disconnect the utility power system before connecting to the main electrical panel.
- Do not operate the generator in an enclosed space with poor ventilation. Only use them outdoors and follow all manufacturer's safety guidelines.
- Turn off any appliances that can be easily turned to the off position until power is restored.
