Good Monday evening! This afternoon's isolated storm has moved into the night and no further rainfall is expected for our area overnight. Nighttime temperatures will drop into the low 70s.
The National Weather Service on Tuesday expanded a heat advisory to all of western Alabama, including areas near and west of Interstate 65.
Heat warnings are issued when the heat index is expected to reach 105. The heat index is a calculation of humidity and air temperature. If the dew point is in the 70s and the temperature is in the mid-to-upper 90s, sweat's ability to evaporate will slow, causing the body's ability to cool itself to slow. 97 There is a big difference between high and low humidity.
Based on this week's forecast, our area may need to issue a heat advisory through Friday. The heat index will fluctuate between 104 and 107 this afternoon into Friday. The heat peak generally occurs between 1 pm and 5 pm, when the heat index rises into the danger zone.
Isolated storms cannot be ruled out each afternoon and evening this week, but no widespread rainfall is expected. It will be more standard summer weather with storms in the afternoon.
Rain chances may increase slightly by the weekend.
In the tropics, we're looking at tropical waves in the mid-Atlantic. This feature could become a tropical depression or storm this weekend or over the weekend, but impact in Alabama is unlikely. Most data suggests a northward turn will likely occur near or east of Florida. We will be keeping an eye on the trend and will let you know if there is a westward trend.
