Hurricane Beryl now 65 miles from Matagorda; expected to make landfall overnight

As Hurricane Beryl approaches, Chief Meteorologist Anthony Yanez reports that Southeast Texas is already experiencing significant rainfall from the storm's outer bands.

The initial line of storms moved from south to north across an area from the Woodlands north to Sealey, bringing significant rainfall.

Current storm status

As of 11 p.m., Beryl was a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 75 mph, moving north-northwest at 10 mph. The storm is expected to make landfall near Matagorda Bay around 2:00 a.m.

Forecasts and potential impacts

Major threats in Houston include flooding and tornadoes, with the worst weather expected between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Futurecast models show bands of rain continuing into the night, with heavy rain forecast for Houston and south I-10 around 2 a.m.

Rainfall and flooding issues

Yanez highlighted the potential for significant rainfall, with 9 inches expected in Houston, 13 inches in Galveston and 6-8 inches in Katy. The slow-moving storm is moving at speeds of up to 10 miles per hour and there is a high risk of flooding due to heavy rainfall in a short period of time.

Power outages and tornado threat

The intensity of the storm raised fears of widespread power outages and downed trees. Tornado watches and warnings are expected to be in effect as Beryl makes landfall, with several possible tornadoes expected across Southeast Texas.

A storm surge warning is in effect Sunday through Monday, with storm surge expected to reach 3 to 5 feet above ground and 6 feet along the coast and in Galveston Bay.
