INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Central Indiana is under a weather alert, with dangerous heat and severe storms expected Thursday. The heat index is expected to peak near or exceed 100 degrees in the afternoon, raising concerns about heat-related illness. The most intense heat will occur in the afternoon, with the greatest threat between today and Thursday.
The severe weather threat will be highest tonight after 5 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. Residents should prepare for damaging winds, heavy rain and localized flooding. Isolated tornadoes and large hail are also possible. Having multiple ways to receive weather alerts and updates is critical.
Additionally, cities such as Bloomington, Crawfordsville and Indianapolis are expected to have heat indexes of 97 to 100 degrees today, potentially climbing to 106 degrees later this week. The National Weather Service recommends avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours and staying hydrated.
Thunderstorms may affect daily warming and resulting heat index values, thereby increasing forecast uncertainty. Residents are urged to monitor weather dynamics and take safety precautions, such as wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing and checking for vulnerable groups.
Temperatures will remain high this week, with a high of 90 degrees today and 93 degrees on Thursday. There is a 40% chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday, which may provide some relief from the heat. Temperatures are expected to drop over the weekend, with highs dropping into the upper 80s.
