Police detain murder suspect of 20-year-old woman found near Ulan railway station in Navi Mumbai
Police have detained a man on suspicion of murdering a 20-year-old woman, whose body was found near Navi Mumbai's Ulan railway station last week.
Yashshri Shinde's body was found in the early hours of Saturday and police believe she was killed sometime between 3:30 and 4:30 pm on Friday, when she took a half-day leave from her office in Navi Mumbai. “Teams have been deployed to arrest the accused. We are investigating the murder from all angles,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Vivek Pansare told PTI on Monday.
Police believe the murder may be related to a failed relationship. Yashshri's father Surendra Kumar has named Dawood Shaikh as the prime suspect. The victim's father believes a man from a different community is responsible for the murder and says police must arrest him immediately. Irate Kin said the victim's father had complained to the police in 2019 about the man molesting his daughter, and the murder was an act of retaliation over the issue.
Former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya met the family of the murdered woman and sought tough laws to combat “love jihad”. In a message on X, he said he met the family and local MLA Mahesh Baldi and assured them of immediate action to arrest her attackers.
Targeting Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is also the Home Minister, Somaiya said a legislation should be brought in against love jihad. Love jihad is a term used by right-wing activists who claim that Muslim men convert Hindu women to Islam by luring them into love marriages. Somaiya also said that provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act must be invoked in this case.
