The month of Saavan witnesses Hindu devotees visiting Shiva temples across India. Devotees follow various rituals to worship Lord Shiva from Jarabishek to the fast on Monday of this month. Likewise, to worship the God of the Universe, Hindu devotees flock to a unique Shiva temple located in the city of Ashok Nagar in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, India. It has a special type of Shiva Linga that attracts tourists from all over the world.
Prakash Mukhopadhyay, who has been serving the temple for 33 years, said, “Only three places in the world have this special form of Shivalinga. This special Shivalinga was brought from Haridwar to North 24 Parganas district about 100 years ago Ashok Nagar city.
Although this unique feature of the temple was not publicized in the past, now devotees from far and wide and even from other states visit the temple to catch a glimpse of the special image of Lord Shiva. Normally, Shiva Lingas are made of black stone, but the Shiva temple in Ashok Nagar city has the upper part in red and the lower part in black. This feature distinguishes this particular Shiva Linga from the Shiva Lingas seen in other Shiva temples.
It is believed that if devotees worship Lord Shiva in this temple, their wishes will never come true. It is therefore not surprising that the attendance of Hindu devotees has been increasing in recent years. Located on Jessore Road in Ashok Nagar, people come from various districts to visit this red Shiva Linga.
The temple is opened in the morning and special pujas are held. The gates of the temple are closed in the evening and open to the public. However, due to the month of Sherawan, the temple is now crowded every day and the visiting hours have also increased. By chanting pure mantras, devotees bathe the Shiva Linga with milk and Ganges water while expressing their wishes.
