Geomagnetic storm watch in effect
Increased solar activity forced the Space Weather Prediction Center to issue a geomagnetic storm observation report for the period July 30 to August 1.
Hurricane Headquarters: Tropical depression likely to form this week
Environmental conditions are expected to become more favorable for development, with the possibility of a tropical depression forming later this week, according to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center.
A tropical depression may form near the Greater Antilles or Bahamas and then move in the general direction of Florida or the southeastern coast later this week and persist into the upcoming weekend.
If the system intensifies into a tropical storm, it will be named Debbie — the fourth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.
Historical park fire continues to spread
The California Park Fire continues to expand, burning nearly 375,000 acres, threatening Northern California. Officials say wildfires have destroyed more than 100 structures and threaten thousands more.

Cal Fire has shared a dramatic video of the Park Fire, which continues to burn tens of thousands of acres in Northern California. The Park Fire is now the seventh-largest wildfire in California history in terms of area burned.
