Hurricane HQ: Beryl begins to hit the Caribbean; Chris brings torrential rain to Mexico; Investment 96L is close to taking shape

No, it’s not the middle of September, it’s the middle of September. It's early July and there's a lot to keep track of in the tropics.

Hurricane Beryl will barrel through the Windward Islands on Monday, bringing life-threatening impacts as it continues its historic journey across the Atlantic basin. Hurricane and tropical storm warnings have been issued for several islands in the southeastern Caribbean.

Further west, Tropical Storm Chris formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico late Sunday night and made landfall in eastern Mexico less than two hours later. Chris could drop up to a foot of rain in parts of the region, threatening mudslides and flash flooding in mountainous terrain.

And Invest 96L, located behind Beryl in the tropical mid-Atlantic, has a high chance of tropical development next week. The National Hurricane Center said a tropical depression could form by mid-week. If the system strengthens into a tropical storm, it will become the fourth name on the list for the 2024 hurricane season – Debbie.

Severe storms hit northern and central plains

Severe thunderstorms are possible across the northern and central plains. The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has rated the risk level for Nebraska, South Dakota and southern North Dakota as a Level 2 out of 5. The biggest threats will be damaging wind gusts and large hail.
