Parts of Gujarat were hit by heavy rains on Monday and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects the rains to continue till Tuesday. The meteorological department has issued an “orange rainfall warning” for some states in central and northwestern India.
The recent heavy rains have wreaked havoc in Gujarat, leading to flooding and flood-like conditions in several areas.
Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir was hit by heavy rainfall on Monday after a period of sweltering heat. The meteorological department predicts that the rain will continue until August 2.
After a brief pause, the southwest monsoon intensified, bringing widespread rainfall to many parts of Kerala on Monday. This resulted in sporadic mudslides, uprooting of trees and severe damage caused by gusty winds at high altitudes in Kozhikode district. Strong winds uprooted many trees and damaged several houses in Thamarassery and Ambayathodu areas in the early hours of Monday.
Orange rainfall alert for these states
The IMD has issued an orange alert for several regions: Rajasthan on July 31, Madhya Maharashtra on August 1 and 2, and coastal Karnataka on July 29 and 30. An orange alert was also issued in parts of Kerala on Monday.
Arunachal Pradesh is expected to be on orange alert from August 1 to 2, with heavy rain expected in some parts of the state.
Orange alert for heavy rain has been issued in northwestern Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi and Chandigarh.
Considerable widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected over western and central India over the next five days. Similar weather conditions are expected across the Northwest.
Rainfall forecast
– According to the latest advisory from the Meteorological Department, heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places in Saurashtra and Kutch districts from July 29 to 30; Konkan and Goa from August 1; East Madhya Pradesh: July 31 to August 2; August 1 and 2 in Madhya Maharashtra and the Gaut districts of Chhattisgarh; August 2 and Western Madhya Pradesh.
– Heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat and West Madhya Pradesh from July 29 to August 2; East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh: 7 July 30 to August 2; July 29, August 1 and 2 for Vidarbha.
– On July 29, local heavy rainfall may also occur in eastern Rajasthan; Uttarakhand: July 29 to August 2; Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir on July 31 and August 1 Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad; July 31, and Haryana-Chandigarh, West Uttar Pradesh and Western Rajasthan.
– Heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Kerala and Mahe Island on July 29; in coastal and southern interior parts of Karnataka on July 29-30. July 29 to 30 for northern interior areas of Karnataka; July 29 to August 1 for Kerala and Mahe Island, coastal and southern interior areas of Karnataka.
– Heavy rainfall is likely to occur in isolated areas of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from July 29 to August 1; Arunachal Pradesh from August 1 to On July 2nd; on July 31st and August 1st, there will be localized heavy rainfall in Odisha. Ripura will also experience locally heavy rainfall; July 29 to August 2: Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Sikkim south of the Himalayas; Assam and Meghalaya July 29 July 30 to 30; Jharkhand: July 30 to August 1; and Gangetic West Bengal on July 29, July 31 and August 1.
