PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It’s late July and, as you might expect, wet weather is back in the Philadelphia area and is here to stay for a while. The added moisture will allow additional clouds to mix with sunshine and the potential for showers and storms over the next few days.
While the potential for severity is fairly low, brief periods of heavy rain and frequent lightning are possible with any storm.
We may see some scattered showers Tuesday afternoon, then a series of thunderstorms move through the area in the evening.
It looks like these storms will be over Lancaster County, PA around 6pm; over Chester County around 7pm or 8pm, and in Philadelphia the best time for storms will be around 9pm or 10pm
As this storm loses daytime heating, it will weaken. Still, the late innings of the Phillies' game against the New York Yankees on Tuesday night could still be disrupted.
Temperatures will hover near or below average on Wednesday but will rise into the 90s by Thursday and beyond, signaling the possibility of another heat wave next weekend.
You may have heard about the huge wildfires in California, Oregon, and Canada. Hundreds of thousands of acres burned, destroying homes, towns, and state and federal forests. Sadly, California's largest fires Chico Park Fire, caused by arson. The Park Fire, which is nearly three times the size of Philadelphia, was still out of control as of Tuesday. The smoke from the park fire was so thick it was visible on satellite imagery.
The question is, will we see smoke from these western fires? So far it has stayed over the western United States and Canada, but over the next week it will drift over the Northern Plains, the Great Lakes and the upper Midwest. Rain over the next few days may keep smoke out of our area.
