The students staged a protest demanding justice for the three UPSC cadets who died on July 29 in the flooded basement of the coaching center in New Delhi's Old Rajinder Nagar.
After protesters met LG VK Saxena to demand justice over the coaching center death, DCP (Delhi Central) M Harshavardhan addressed the students and assured them that the authorities were looking into their demands
Compensation of Rs 1 crore to the families of the victims, proper municipal maintenance and shifting of training centers to a more spacious area in the national capital: these were the demands raised by a delegation of protesting UPSC aspirants when they met the Lieutenant Governor on Wednesday.
Later in the evening, DCP (Delhi Central) M Harshavardhan addressed the students and assured them that the authorities were looking into their demands. “Your demands have attracted the attention of the highest offices in the country. Believe in the system that you want to be a part of,” Harshavardhan told students who have been protesting for the past 72 hours.
Three IAS aspirants – Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana and Nevin Delvin from Kerala – died tragically in the flooded basement of a coaching center in old Rajinder Nagar, triggering widespread protests . Students have since called for action against the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for failing to maintain the stormwater drainage system, leading to flooding following heavy rains on July 27 evening.
A student on the delegation told CNN-News18 that LG had agreed to the demands and asked for 15 days to three weeks. The DCP reiterated this and updated the protesters on the police investigation and issued a notice to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
However, assurances from local authorities and senior police officers appeared to divide the protesting students into two groups – those who want the protest to be called off once authorities listen to their views, and those who do not trust the system. Now, it remains to be seen whether protesters can find a way to remain united.
