Days after three civil service candidates died when the basement of a college building in central Delhi was flooded due to heavy rains, authorities have ordered a safety audit of all training centers operating in Srinagar, officials said on Wednesday.
They said all private coaching institutions have been directed to cooperate with the inspection team and adhere to the laid down guidelines to ensure safety of students.
Three Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) candidates died when the basement of the Rau IAS study circle building at the Old Rajinder Nagar coaching center in central Delhi was flooded after heavy rains on July 27.
Water poured from flooded gutters into the basement that houses the library.
“Deputy Commissioner (Srinagar) Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat has ordered a safety audit of all coaching centers in the district,” a spokesperson said.
He said the decision was taken in view of the old Rajinder Nagar incident.
The deputy commissioner has directed a comprehensive inspection of the buildings housing all training institutions.
The inspection focused on aspects such as the use of basements for classes, compliance with fire safety regulations, compliance with building by-laws, prevention of overcrowding in classrooms, verification of tutoring centers operating in residential buildings and adequacy of escape routes within the building.
He added that a thorough safety audit will be conducted at the coaching centres, especially in Srinagar, to avoid any potential mishaps.
Bhat has also constituted a committee comprising officials from relevant departments to assess whether such coaching institutes comply with safety standards.
The committee has been directed to submit its report within a reasonable time.
