After conducting a preliminary inventory from the data collected approximately. Monitoring results of 2,000 weather stations across the country by the DWD National Weather Service in Offenbach, Germany, show that earlier dramatic predictions of a “summer from hell” have not yet come true.

False alarmist predictions
In March 2024, “experts” such as biologist Mark Benecke warned that climate change in Germany was “about to peak this summer” and predicted “unprecedented high temperatures” in 2024.
June in Germany was close to normal, and now July 2024 is also “quite variable, with continued summer weather simply not possible” according to DWD data.
The brief spell of warm weather was quickly interrupted by showers and thunderstorms.
slightly warmer than usual
The average temperature in July 2024 (preliminary) is 18.9°C, which is 0.6°C above the average temperature of 18.3°C in the reference period 1991 to 2020. The weather is cool at the beginning of the month and has an autumn feel.
The peak was recorded at the Bad Muskau station (Saxony), where it reached 34.8°C on 10 July.
On July 30, the night temperature dropped sharply again, with the lowest temperature in Saxony, Germany being 3.8 °C.
a few warm nights
Tropical nights (when the minimum temperature does not fall below 20.0 °C) are the exception rather than the rule, and only occur sparingly in the Upper Rhine, Lower Bavaria, Saxony and Greater Berlin regions. Earlier reports warned of a sharp increase in warm tropical nights in German cities such as Hamburg, which would make sleeping more difficult. Hamburg has not experienced a night like this so far this summer.
average rainfall
“Experts” also warn that Germany will see more droughts in the summer as the climate warms. But this summer so far has been wetter than usual. According to DWD data, rainfall in July was 88 liters per square meter. Compared with the climate reference period from 1991 to 2020 (87 l/m2), the average value for July 2024 is almost zero.
more sunshine
In terms of July sunshine, the country’s average sunshine duration in July was 237 hours, which was only slightly higher than the average for the 1991-2020 climate reference period (226 hours). This may help keep the month slightly warmer than average.
