The demand and import volume of marigold flowers in the market are declining.
Marigold is a flower that is in increasing demand and is essential for various pujas and social events.
The two Midnapur districts of West Bengal are famous for floriculture, farmers of West Medinipur and East Medinipur grow a variety of flowers. Marigold is a flower that is in increasing demand and is essential for various pujas and social events. Production was affected by unstable weather conditions, resulting in lower output.
As a result, demand and imports of marigold flowers in the market are declining. Lack of rain and high temperatures during the monsoon season cause many flowers to wilt, naturally pushing up market prices. How do farmers and traders feel about this situation?
Marigold flowers are widely used in social and religious ceremonies, making them versatile in worship and decoration. Currently, market demand exceeds production, causing prices to rise. Several farmers in Pinla, West Midnapur district, grow marigold flowers and earn huge profits every year.
Uttam Ghora, a farmer from Pingla, cultivates marigolds on a few acres of land and earns handsome profits every year. The area of marigold flowers he cultivates is about 18 decimal places, and the initial cost ranges from 9,000 rupees to 10,000 rupees. By using minimal amounts of fertilizer, he achieved substantial profits, often doubling his investment at current market prices. The flowers are sold at wholesale prices in local markets and other places, including Kolaghat.
Therefore, growing marigold flowers, even on a small scale, can yield good annual profits. With minimal care, the flowers will bloom within a few months. However, production declined slightly due to unpredictable weather. Despite this, farmers still make a profit by growing marigolds to meet market demand.
Another farmer named Balasubramanian from Nalur village near Kodavasal panchayat in Tiruvarur district grows marigolds. In an interview with News18, he said that he has been growing flowers on his farmland for the past eight years. The farmer added that the flower market brought him huge profits during the festival.
He said he purchased the seeds of the flower from the Osur region. After buying them, he sowed them on his land. The seedlings will grow and bloom within 45 days. Through this process, marigold flowers grow and are picked every three days.
Flower prices increase during the holidays. Balasubramanian added that if he spends Rs 10,000 per acre in farming, then his profit per acre is Rs 80,000.
